Happy Soul Moral Stories

“YOU’RE A DOCTOR’S WIFE. STOP ACTING LIKE A HELPLESS PATIENT!” My Husband Snapped While I Was In Labor With Our 10-Pound Baby Because He Believed I’d Hurt His Young Female Intern. When I Begged Him For An Emergency C-Section, He Coldly Replied, “I’M THE DOCTOR HERE. YOU DON’T GET TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO!” He’d Already Taken His Young Intern’s Side Against Me, But I Never Imagined He’d Go This Far. Hours Later, I Woke Up In The ICU To Find Him Crying Outside My Door. Then Another Doctor Walked In, Holding My Medical Chart, And Asked Me One Question That Changed Everything…

Part 2 of 3

“We’ll arrange that.”

Then she asked another question.

“What happened between you and Sophie before the medication tray fell?”

I described Sophie’s nails digging into my arm, the sudden pain, and her immediate accusation.

Elena examined my arm.

Four crescent-shaped marks remained visible.

She requested photographs for the investigation.

Then she looked at me carefully.

“There’s something else. Sophie left the hospital shortly after your delivery. She’s been asked to speak with the program director, but we haven’t been able to reach her.”

I stared at her.

“She disappeared?”

“She hasn’t responded to the hospital’s calls. That’s all we know.”

My mother crossed her arms.

“How convenient.”

Elena didn’t respond.

Instead, she asked whether I wanted to speak with Cameron.

I thought about the note in my chart.

“Yes,” I said. “But I want you here.”

PART 2 — THE MAN WHO CHOSE SOMEONE ELSE

Cameron entered my room looking as though he hadn’t slept.

His hair was disheveled, his coat wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

When he saw me awake, his face crumpled.

“Amelia.”

He stepped toward the bed.

I raised my hand.

“Stay there.”

He stopped.

“I’ve been trying to see you since yesterday.”

“I know.”

“I thought I lost you.”

I watched him carefully.

“Did you change my medical record?”

His expression tightened.

“Amelia, please. Can we talk about what happened first?”

“That’s what I’m doing.”

He looked at Elena.

“This is between me and my wife.”

“No,” I said. “It’s between a patient and the doctor who treated her.”

He flinched.

“I entered a note based on what we’d discussed during your pregnancy.”

“I said I wanted to avoid unnecessary surgery. I never refused a medically necessary C-section.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

He looked down.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I’d been avoiding.

“Why did you believe Sophie?”

He rubbed his face.

“She told me you’d been threatening her for weeks.”

I stared at him.

“I’ve barely spoken to her.”

“She showed me messages.”

“What messages?”

“Screenshots. She said they were from you.”

I felt a chill.

“I never sent her anything.”

Cameron looked at me.

“She said you were jealous. That you wanted her removed from the program.”

“And you believed that?”

He didn’t answer.

I leaned back against the pillows.

“You believed an intern’s screenshots over your wife’s medical judgment while she was giving birth.”

“I was under pressure.”

“So was I.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Amelia, I made a terrible mistake.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“You didn’t make one mistake, Cameron. You made a series of choices.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

“You dismissed my symptoms. You argued against a second opinion. You let Sophie influence how you treated me. Then you entered a note that made it look like I’d refused surgery.”

“I was afraid you’d file a complaint.”

The room went quiet.

“You were afraid I’d report you?”

He nodded miserably.

“Sophie said you were already documenting everything. She said you wanted to ruin my career.”

I stared at him.

“So you decided to protect yourself before I even survived childbirth.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Then tell me what you meant.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Elena stepped forward.

“Dr. Bennett, this conversation is over.”

Cameron looked at me.

“Please don’t shut me out. I love you.”

I thought about the way he’d looked at Sophie when she cried, how quickly he’d believed her, and how slowly he’d listened to me.

“I asked you to protect our son,” I said. “You treated me like an enemy.”

He began crying.

I turned toward Elena.

“I’d like him to leave.”

Cameron stood there another moment, then walked out.

I didn’t call him back.

THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT EXPLAINED SOPHIE

Two days later, I was strong enough to sit upright for longer periods.

My mother brought me clean clothes and my phone. I’d barely looked at it since the delivery.

There were dozens of missed calls from Cameron, messages from colleagues, and several emails from hospital administration.

Then I saw a message from Dr. Anil Patel, a psychiatrist I’d known since residency.

Amelia, I have something you should see. It concerns Sophie. Let me know when you’re ready.

I called him.

He arrived that afternoon carrying a folded sheet of paper.

“A resident named Leah Morris contacted me,” he explained. “She’s been worried about Sophie’s behavior for some time.”

“What behavior?”

“Sophie told several people you were unstable and jealous of her. She claimed you were threatening her career.”

I closed my eyes.

“She was building a story about me.”

“That’s what Leah believes.”

He handed me the paper.

It was a photocopy of an old photograph.

Cameron stood outside a courthouse beside Sophie and an older woman.

The photograph appeared to be six or seven years old. Cameron looked younger, but there was no mistaking him.

“Where did this come from?” I asked.

“Leah says Sophie kept it in her desk. She photographed it because she thought it was strange that Sophie had known Cameron long before joining the program.”

I studied the older woman’s face.

Something about her looked familiar.

Then I turned the photograph over.

Someone had written five words on the back.

Ask Cameron what happened to Grace.

I read them twice.

“Who’s Grace?” I whispered.

Anil shook his head.

“I don’t know. Leah didn’t either.”

That evening, I asked Elena to arrange another conversation with Cameron.

He arrived expecting to discuss our marriage.

Instead, I placed the photograph on the table between us.

“Who’s Grace?”

The color drained from his face.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sat down.

“Where did you get that?”

“Answer me.”

He stared at the photograph.

“Grace was Sophie’s older sister.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“You knew her?”

He nodded.

“Years ago. Before you and I got married, she was a patient at another hospital where I worked.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“She had a complicated pregnancy. I wasn’t her primary physician, but I was involved in her care.”

“What happened?”

His voice grew quieter.

“She lost the baby. There was an internal review afterward.”

I waited.

“And?”

He looked at me.

“Sophie believed I was responsible.”

The room seemed suddenly smaller.

“Did you tell me any of this?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because the review found no misconduct on my part. I thought it was over.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Then why was Sophie working directly under you?”

Cameron lowered his eyes.

“I didn’t recognize her when she joined the program. She’d changed her surname. By the time I realized who she was, she’d already been assigned to my service.”
