“You’re Nothing But a Burden.” My Husband Threw Me Out While I Was in Labor, Then Walked Into My Hospital Room With Another Woman, and Ordered Me to Sign One Secret Document Before a Three-Star General Come To Changed Everything

Part 2 of 3

“Then explain why she’s wearing it.”

He looked toward the window.

That was when I knew there would be no useful answer.

Mark had always looked directly at me when he believed he was right.

“The marriage is over,” he said. “It has been for a long time.”

“You threw me out six hours before our daughter was born.”

“You had somewhere to go.”

David stood up from the chair near the window.

Mark seemed to notice him for the first time.

“Who is he?”

“My deputy.”

“Of course he is.”

David’s expression did not change.

“Sir, you should lower your voice.”

Mark turned toward him.

“This is a family conversation.”

“Then act like family,” I said.

The room went quiet.

Mark looked at Emma, but only for a second.

Then his attention returned to me.

“You’ve been hiding money from me.”

Lisa stared at him.

I shifted Emma higher on my shoulder.

“You came here to discuss money?”

“I came here because we need to settle things.”

He removed a folded document from inside his jacket.

Even before he opened it, I knew what it was.

A power of attorney.

I had reviewed enough of them during overseas assignments to recognize the format.

Mark placed it on the bedside table.

“This is temporary. Until you recover.”

I did not touch it.

“Recover from childbirth?”

“You’re exhausted. You’ll be caring for a newborn. The estate paperwork is complicated.”

“Who prepared this?”

He hesitated.

“A financial adviser.”

“Name.”

“That isn’t important.”

David moved closer to the bedside table.

“Do you want me to photograph it?”

“Yes.”

Mark reached for the document.

David placed one hand over it first.

He did not grab Mark. He simply held the paper flat against the table.

“The colonel asked me to preserve it.”

Mark stared at him.

“The colonel?”

Before I could answer, voices came from the hallway.

A nurse entered, followed by two uniformed officers and a tall man in dress blues with three silver stars on each shoulder.

Lieutenant General Michael Grant had commanded my division two years earlier.

I had not known he was coming.

Everyone in the room stood except me.

Lisa’s face lost all color.

General Grant looked at Emma first.

Then he smiled.

“I hope I’m not interrupting.”

I glanced at the power of attorney beneath David’s hand.

“Your timing is excellent, sir.”

The Order Mark Never Expected

General Grant walked to the side of my bed and placed a dark blue folder on the table beside me.

“Sarah, I wanted to deliver this personally.”

Mark looked at the folder, then at me.

The general continued.

“Your promotion was approved yesterday. Effective immediately, you are confirmed as colonel and selected for command of the new regional operations group after your leave.”

He extended his hand.

I shifted Emma carefully and shook it.

“Thank you, sir.”

“You earned it.”

Mark stared at me.

“Colonel?”

General Grant turned.

“Yes.”

Mark looked genuinely confused.

For six years, he had known I was an Army officer. He had attended events, met colleagues and seen medals in my office.

But I had never discussed classified work at home. I had never used my rank to win an argument. Mark had apparently decided that meant my career was ordinary.

Lisa stood rigidly near the wall.

General Grant noticed her.

“Captain Turner.”

“Sir.”

“Why are you here?”

Lisa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mark answered for her.

“She’s with me.”

The general looked at the ring.

Then he looked at the newborn in my arms.

His face remained calm.

“Captain, step into the hallway.”

Lisa did not move.

“Sir, I can explain.”

“Not here.”

She glanced at Mark.

He reached for her arm.

“She doesn’t have to go anywhere.”

One of the uniformed officers stepped forward.

“Sir, remove your hand.”

Mark let go.

I looked at Lisa.

“Before you leave, answer one question.”

She swallowed.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Did you give my husband information about my schedule, medical leave or estate meeting?”

Mark turned toward her.

Lisa’s eyes filled, but she did not cry.

“He already knew most of it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

She lowered her voice.

“I told him when your legal appointment was.”

David stopped photographing the document.

General Grant’s expression hardened.

“Anything else?”

Lisa looked at the floor.

“I may have confirmed the name of the firm handling the estate.”

Mark stepped toward her.

“Lisa, stop talking.”

The officer blocked him.

I looked at the power of attorney again.

The law firm named at the bottom was not mine.

But the document included my full Social Security number, my grandfather’s trust name and the approximate date the assets would be released.

Information I had never given Mark.

Emma made a small sound in my arms.

I pressed my cheek against her hair.

Then I looked at David.

“Call my attorney. Tell Dana someone has used confidential information to prepare financial documents in my name.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Mark pointed at the paper.

“That’s not what this is.”

“Then you can explain it to investigators.”

“Sarah, don’t be ridiculous.”

“You brought a forged financial document into my hospital room less than six hours after I gave birth.”
