Life Short Tales Moral Stories

“Come Give Daddy A Hug.” My Husband Said As He Opened His Arms To Our Two-Year-Old Daughter After Eleven Days Spent Busy On Vacation With His Mistress. She Stayed Seated On The Floor And Looked At Him. “I Was Sick.” He Whispered, “I Know, Sweetheart.” Then She Said The Four Words He Couldn’t Escape: “You Were Not Here.”

Part 2 of 3

When Victor returned, Ryan lowered his voice.

“Lauren, we can handle this privately. You cannot destroy our family over one vacation.”

Lauren removed a printed page from the folder.

“You used our shared email for the reservation. The confirmation was archived automatically.”

She placed it in front of him.

Two adults.

One hotel room.

The second guest was Rebecca Sloan, the sales director at Ryan’s company.

Ryan stared at the page.

“That only started in San Francisco.”

Lauren felt her fingertips turn cold.

She had not even asked about an affair yet.

PART 4: THE LIFE HE WAS TESTING

Victor carried Noah into the room a few minutes later, supporting the baby against one shoulder. A patch of milk dampened his expensive shirt, but he did not seem to care.

Ryan finally looked at his son.

“He got bigger.”

Lauren leaned against the chair.

“Yes. While you were gone.”

Victor offered to remain nearby with the children while Lauren and Ryan spoke alone.

Lauren agreed because she wanted her own voice to handle what came next.

“Was Rebecca with you for the entire trip?”

Ryan rubbed the back of his neck.

“Most of it. We had meetings with potential partners.”

“You told me you needed to step away from work and family.”

“I did not know how to talk to you anymore.”

Lauren’s laugh contained no humor.

“Apparently you knew how to buy two plane tickets.”

Eventually, Ryan admitted the emotional involvement had begun months earlier.

Lunches became messages.

Messages became late-night conversations.

Then, after a business dinner, they kissed.

At the time, Noah had not yet reached one month old.

Lauren remembered waiting for Ryan to come home one evening because she had not showered all day and needed him to hold the newborn.

When he finally arrived, he complained that investors expected constant availability.

Lauren apologized for adding pressure.

That memory came back with painful clarity.

“You made me believe I was asking too much.”

Ryan looked away.

“I was lost.”

“Where was I inside any of the decisions you were making?”

He had no answer.

The $18,000 had been transferred into a personal account to fund the trip and prepare for the possibility of moving out.

Ryan admitted he had been considering separation.

His plan was to return home afterward and decide whether a future with Rebecca felt promising enough to pursue.

Lauren stared at the bottle basket beside the sink.

“You wanted to test whether another life made you happier while keeping this one available as a backup.”

Ryan immediately protested.

“It was not that calculated.”

“The money transfer was calculated. The reservation was calculated.”

He said nothing.

Lauren had once admired Ryan’s confidence.

Now she understood how much of that confidence depended on other people quietly absorbing the consequences.

Victor returned after placing Noah in a nearby bassinet.

Ryan’s first question was:

“What happens with my company now?”

Not Sophie’s emergency visit.

Not Noah’s cough.

His company.

Victor’s expression hardened.

“The finance team requested documentation for several travel expenses. They will continue reviewing them, while I remove myself from every decision involving you personally.”

Ryan insisted that some business meetings had genuinely occurred.

Victor nodded.

“Then provide the documentation.”

Lauren understood what her father was doing.

There would be no secret telephone call destroying Ryan’s career.

No billionaire revenge.

No private command.

Victor would step aside and allow professionals with appropriate authority to examine the records.

That was exactly what Lauren had requested.

The day before Ryan returned, Victor had initially offered to buy her another home and solve everything financially.

Lauren stopped him.

“Ask me what I need first.”

Victor began again.

Lauren told him she needed sleep, practical help with the children, and his presence during the confrontation.

He provided all three.

For Lauren, that simple respect repaired something old between them.

PART 5: THE WORD HE DID NOT EXPECT

Ryan moved closer.

“I am home now. We can still fix this.”

Lauren looked at him.

“I want a divorce.”

The word hit him harder than the statements, reservation, or investment questions.

“You are ending seven years because of a three-week crisis?”

Lauren shook her head.

“I am ending it because of the decisions you made before, during, and after those three weeks. Even now, you are mostly asking what you might lose.”

Ryan asked to stay overnight.

Lauren refused.

She told him to use a hotel while attorneys arranged the practical details of separation.

Eventually, he agreed.

Before leaving, he asked to see the children.

Sophie sat on the carpet with crayons and a stuffed bear.

When Ryan entered, she looked up.

“Daddy.”

He crouched and opened his arms.

“Come give me a hug.”

Sophie stayed where she was.

“I was sick.”

Ryan’s arms slowly lowered.

“I know, sweetheart.”

“You were not here.”

Lauren did not interrupt to make the moment easier for him.

Ryan sat on the floor beside Sophie without touching her.

After several minutes, she handed him a crayon.

He drew a crooked house.

Sophie corrected one of his windows.

Their marriage was already beyond repair.

A father, however, had just been given several minutes to begin learning how to listen.

PART 6: TOLERANCE WAS NOT CONSENT

The following weeks filled with appointments, invoices, childcare schedules, and difficult conversations.

Ryan sent flowers.

Lauren refused them.

When he purchased things for the children, she accepted only items that matched what they actually needed.

Ryan’s mother called and told Lauren to think about Sophie and Noah.

“That is exactly what I am doing.”
