“These aren’t random payments.”

“I know.”

I nodded again.

For the first time in years, we weren’t talking like father and daughter.

We were talking like two executives trying to stop a company from bleeding.

He folded his hands.

“Come back.”

I looked at him.

“The board has been asking when you were coming back for over a year.”

I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed hearing conversations about numbers instead of fertility schedules.

About contracts instead of medications.

About decisions instead of excuses.

“Kenneth filed paperwork to reduce my voting rights after the divorce,” I said quietly.

Dad looked at me.

“Then we’ll make sure he never gets the chance.”

That afternoon I signed the documents returning as interim Chief Executive Officer while the board prepared a formal vote.

When I walked back into Rollins Global headquarters, employees I hadn’t seen in years stood up from their desks.

Some smiled.

Some looked relieved.

Others looked nervous.

One face, however, stayed completely still.

Marcus Salinas.

Our senior strategy director.

He looked at me for only a second before calmly minimizing something on his computer screen.

Most people wouldn’t have noticed.

The old CFO in me did.

And for the first time, I had the unmistakable feeling that Kenneth had never been working alone.

My first week back at Rollins Global felt less like running a company and more like walking through a house after a burglary.

Everything looked normal.

Nothing actually was.

Marcus Salinas remained calm in every executive meeting. He volunteered for extra work, answered every question with practiced confidence, and congratulated me on returning.

“It’s good to have you back, Sabrina.”

His smile never reached his eyes.

Instead of confronting him, I quietly restricted access to several upcoming contract files. Only four executives could see them.

Three days later, Parsons Dynamics submitted a competing proposal that mirrored confidential details from those documents almost word for word.

The leak wasn’t Kenneth anymore.

It was someone still sitting inside my own boardroom.

Marcus.

I didn’t accuse him.

Not yet.

I wanted him to keep talking.

Meanwhile my divorce attorney filed the paperwork against Kenneth.

He didn’t contest it.

For the first time since our marriage began falling apart, he requested a meeting.

We met in a quiet downtown café.

Kenneth looked exhausted.

He had lost weight.

His expensive suits suddenly seemed too large.

He slid a small USB drive across the table.

“There’s something you don’t know.”

I didn’t touch it.

“You have about thirty seconds before I leave.”

He nodded.

“Maya wasn’t random.”

I said nothing.

“Someone introduced us.”

That finally caught my attention.

Kenneth lowered his voice.

“Raymond Parsons.”

The name landed harder than I expected.

Raymond owned Parsons Dynamics, Rollins Global’s largest competitor.

“He approached me years ago.”

Kenneth stared into his untouched coffee.

“At first it was consulting work… then market intelligence… then confidential information.”

I looked at him steadily.

“You sold my family’s company.”

He nodded once.

Then he said something I hadn’t expected.

“I thought I was working for Raymond. I wasn’t working for the man who was really paying him.”

Before I could ask another question, he stood.

“Watch the files.”

He left without looking back.

A Family Dinner That Ended With Handcuffs

Two days later my brother Justin called.

His voice sounded broken.

“Can you come to Memorial Hospital?”

When I arrived, I found Justin sitting outside an examination room while Maya cried quietly inside.

She had collapsed earlier that morning after severe stress.

Justin looked exhausted.
