A voice I recognized before the camera even showed his face.

My uncle.

He wasn’t visiting.

My hands froze on the keyboard.

“Move faster,” Randall said in the recording.

Raymond laughed.

“And Justin?”

The room fell silent.

I had expected greed.

Federal agents had arrested Raymond Parsons during another press conference after investigators obtained recordings connecting him to corporate fraud, conspiracy, and evidence tampering.

I watched quietly from my office.

Five minutes later my phone rang.

Kenneth.

“It’s Randall,” he said.

“He’s trying to destroy the company before investigators reach him.”

Within an hour our computer systems went dark.

Screens across headquarters flashed error messages.

Manufacturing stopped.

Customer portals disappeared.

The company’s stock dropped again.

Someone had launched a coordinated cyberattack.

While our technology teams fought to restore operations, anonymous investment groups quietly bought thousands of Rollins Global shares at the reduced price.

The ownership records led back to one company.

Apex Capital.

The same company Kenneth’s wire transfers had mentioned weeks earlier.

Randall finally revealed what he wanted all along.

Not revenge.

Ownership.

The Choice That Finally Belonged to Me

Randall arrived at my father’s house carrying what he called a rescue proposal.

He calmly placed acquisition papers on the dining room table.

“Sign today,” he told my father. “Before the company loses everything.”

Dad picked up the pen.

I stopped him.

Without raising my voice, I projected one final slide onto the television.

Every recent stock purchase.

Every company connected to Randall.

The room became perfectly still.

Randall looked at me for several seconds before speaking.

I nodded.

“No.”

Randall was led away without another word.

A week later, investigators arrested my other uncle, Philip, after Raymond agreed to cooperate and confirmed the entire takeover scheme.

Kenneth eventually returned every dollar he had taken and testified against them.

He visited me one final time after leaving the hospital following an assault by Randall’s associates.

“Could we ever try again?” he asked quietly.

I looked out the window toward the Denver skyline.

Years earlier I would have answered from loneliness.

This time I answered from peace.

“I hope you build an honest life, Kenneth.”

“But it won’t be with me.”

He nodded once.

That was enough.

After he left, I opened the top drawer of my desk.

Inside was an old piece of paper covered with baby names I had written during years of fertility treatments.

I read them one last time.

Then I folded the page in half.

And tore it cleanly down the middle before dropping it into the trash.

Outside my office windows, Rollins Global’s lights stretched across downtown Denver.
