Stepmother and her Lover ᴛʜʀᴇᴡ Me Out After My Father’s d.є.αth

Part 1 of 2

The rain started the moment they lowered my father’s casket, as if the sky itself refused to say goodbye.

I was sixteen, standing beside my stepmother, clutching a soaked white rose. I didn’t understand d.є.αth, but I knew loss. My father, Michael Harris, was a real estate investor in San Diego—kind, fair, and quiet. His sudden heart attack stunned everyone, not only for the tragedy but for the fortune he left behind.

My stepmother, Vanessa Harris, stood in black lace, her red lipstick flawless even in the storm. She’d been his wife for two years, and everyone whispered she’d married for money. I only knew she never loved me.

When the guests left, Vanessa drove me through the rain. I thought we were going home. We weren’t.

She stopped on a dim street near downtown and said, “Get out.”

I blinked. “Where are we going?”
“Not we,” she said. “You.”

The door slammed. Her Mercedes disappeared into the storm, leaving me shivering on the sidewalk, clutching my father’s photograph.

I don’t know how long I stood there before a man approached, umbrella in hand.

“Hey,” he said gently. “You lost?”

He was in his forties, well-dressed, with kind eyes behind his glasses. His name was David Turner, a lawyer who’d once worked with my father. When I told him what happened, his face hardened.

He called someone on his phone, asked for a copy of my father’s will. A few minutes later, rain dripping from his coat, he read the document and whispered, “Your father didn’t leave you with nothing, Emma. He left you everything.”

The next morning, I woke in a warm guest room overlooking the Pacific. For a moment, I thought I’d dreamed it all. Then I saw my father’s photo by the bed.

Downstairs, David was on the phone, pacing. “Then explain to me why the will wasn’t filed,” he said sharply. A pause. “Missing? How convenient.”

When he saw me, he smiled gently. “Morning, kiddo. Pancakes are ready.”

Over breakfast, he asked, “Do you remember if your dad kept important papers somewhere?”
“In his study,” I said. “There’s a box under his desk. He told me it was for me when I grew up.”

That was enough. Within hours, David obtained a warrant to search our house.

Vanessa was there, dressed in silk, pretending to mourn.
“David,” she cooed. “Come to visit your favorite widow?”
“I’m here for Emma,” he replied coldly.

She smirked. “That child has nothing.”
“Actually,” he said, raising his phone, “she has everything.”

Behind my father’s desk, they found a hidden compartment—a sealed envelope with his real will, notarized six months before his death. Inside was also a short letter:“If anything happens to me, Emma is to remain under David Turner’s guardianship until she turns twenty-one. I trust him with her life.” —Michael Harris
