Stepmother and her Lover ᴛʜʀᴇᴡ Me Out After My Father’s d.є.αth

Part 2 of 2

Vanessa’s face turned white.

A week later, we stood in probate court in downtown San Diego. Reporters filled the room, cameras flashing. David stood beside me, calm and steady. Vanessa, in designer black, glared across the aisle.

When the judge spoke, the room fell silent.
“Michael Harris’s estate belongs entirely to his daughter, Emma Harris. Any attempt to conceal this will constitutes fraud.”

The gavel struck. Vanessa’s mouth fell open, but no words came out.

David leaned down and whispered, “It’s over.”

But it wasn’t—not yet.

Weeks later, headlines screamed:
“WIDOW ACCUSED OF HIDING MILLIONAIRE’S WILL.”

David did everything to protect me—hired a tutor, arranged therapy, and moved me to a small school in La Jolla where no one knew my name. I started sleeping again, even laughing sometimes.

One evening, I asked, “Do I have to go back to court?”
He smiled. “No, sweetheart. The estate is officially yours.”
“Then why do you still look worried?”
“Because Vanessa isn’t the type to walk away quietly.”

He was right. Two weeks later, she filed an appeal, claiming emotional distress and disputing guardianship. David fought back, uncovering proof that she’d secretly transferred my father’s money to offshore accounts before his death.

When the evidence hit the courtroom, her lawyer quit. Vanessa was arrested for fraud and embezzlement.

As David led me out, reporters shouted questions. I looked back and saw her in handcuffs.
“Where will she go?” I asked.
“Somewhere far away,” he said. “Let’s not think about her anymore.”

For the first time in months, I smiled.

Months passed. The Harris estate was restored, and David officially became my guardian. Life quieted—mornings by the ocean, afternoons filled with homework and piano lessons.

One afternoon, David found a letter hidden in his desk drawer. My father’s handwriting was shaky but clear: “David, if you’re reading this, thank you. Teach her not about wealth, but about kindness. That’s what matters most.”

That evening, he took me down to the beach. The sunset painted the waves gold. I ran across the sand barefoot, laughing.

And for the first time since the funeral, I felt free.

Justice had been served.
And a new life for Emma Harris had just begun.
